How colour affects our babies

We know that we need light to survive, that is a scientific fact, but we are less aware of how colour has an impact on our emotions and behaviour. The yellow of sunshine lifts our spirits, the blue of the sea calms us, the soft glow of red warms us, and being around green in nature gives us harmony.

Babies are no exeception, they have a great deal of adjustments to make in their early years and thrive in a calming environment. The nursery would benefit from pastal colours like pale lilac, corals, creams, soft peaches, soft blues and pinks. Try to steer away from patterns and strong colours as this will encourage hyperactivity and restlessness.

The 'magnetic' colours of red, orange and yellow are warm, energising and uplifting so only use these in areas where you wish to stimulate your baby. The 'electrical' colours of blue, indigo and violet are much more cool, soothing and calming. Green is a harmonising colour and it creates balance.

These colours also relate to what your baby wears, again the softer the pastel colours, the more calm you baby will be. It is noticeable that many clothes are designed with gentle white and creams to give your baby a feeling of comfort.

It is also noticeable that many of todays toys are brightly coloured, John Crane's range are vibrantly decorated allowing stimulas for your baby. Pram toys are great in reds and yellows so that your baby keeps stimulated while being pushed but if you wish your baby to sleep then maybe add a calming soft blue or pink cover to relax them.
